Apple Unveils new iPhone 5S and 5C models – Fingerprints and Colors

Apple announced today the upcoming iPhone 5S and 5C models, including lots of plastic, colors, and fingerprint reading buttons. Although there was no word on the rumored iWatch, there were some small suggestions that it may be coming out within the next year or so. New pricing brackets appeared for both models, and the 5 will no longer be offered for sale unlike previous years where it would simply drop a price point. iPhone 5C

Main features:

  • Single-piece design – The back and sides of this phone are all one piece
  • 5 colors
  • Poly-carbonate back/sides should let all that awesome signal through, especially with the steel chassis doubling as an antenna
  • iOS 7
  • Same A6 processor as the iPhone 5
  • 4-inch retina display
  • Same 8-megapixel rear camera as the iPhone 5
  • Improved Facetime HD camera in the front
  • Larger battery
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n support 2.4GHz and 5GHz
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • “More LTE bands than any smartphone in the world”
  • Silicone rubber cases at $29 each
  • Pre-Order Sept 13th
  • Available Sept 20 on contract for $99 – 16GB and $199 – 32GB

iPhone 5S

Main features:

  • Looks exactly like the iPhone 5 with the exception of the new color (see below)
  • Three colors: Silver, “Space Grey”, and now Gold
  • Fingerprint “Touch ID” feature that will read fingerprints to allow unlocking and enabling things like purchasing apps that required a manual password entry previously
  • A7 chip which should yield 2x performance of iPhone 5’s A6 and is the first 64-bit smarphone processor according to Apple
  • M7 Motion Coprocessor to track movements via the accelerator, gyroscope, and compass. Looks like it will be integrated with Nike + and works with the CoreMotion API in iOS 7
  • f/2.2 aperture in the camera
  • 15% larger camera sensor (8 megapixels still)
  • Dual LED flash for varying tones of light
  • Hold-shutter for 10fps burst shots
  • 120fps 720p video mode for slowing down action
  • 28-megapixel panoramas
  • Improved battery – 250 hours standby, 10 hours browsing on LTE, and 10 hours of talk on 3G
  • No NFC
  • No wireless charging
  • No 802.11ac networking
  • Also has new line of $29 cases from Apple
  • No Sept 13th pre-order
  • Available Sept 20th at $199 for the 16GB on contract
