That’s right! As a gift for Easter Sunday (April 8th), AT&T is now going to be allowing customers to unlock their iPhones (not really a gift, but maybe?). There are some terms and conditions that apply, but they’re not too bad if you’re an existing customer and have completed the contract on your previous iPhone and upgraded. Here it is in better detail:
“Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones,” the statement reads. “The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.”
We expect the market to fill up with unlocked iPhone’s and for T-Mobile to get a large spike in iPhone usage. One thing to remember, however, is that T-Mobile users like myself can use the phones for voice and EDGE data, but no 3G from the T-Mobile network due to band issues :(.
