The USB 3.0 promoter group has announced that they are developing a new type of USB connector, named Type-C. This connector (both plug and receptacle) will be a part of the upcoming USB 3.1 standard. These plugs will be similar in size to the current MicroUSB connector and will not be compatible with existing USB receptacles. Aside from reduced size, the new USB Type-C will also be reversible, so no more fiddling with getting the connector right-side-up and vice-versa. More info can be found in the source link below.
